201 7768   Perhaps because no one else will.   During a charity event where he gave used fur coats to women in need on behalf of the animal rights group, Gilbert Arenas told The Associated Press that he is not nervous over his March 26 sentencing on gun possession charges.   It was a brazen answer to a pointless question, as the judge presiding over the case won't ponder Arenas's confidence when deciding whether to send the fallen Wizards star to prison.    "If the judge goes off with the story the papers write, then, yeah," Arenas said. "But if he goes off the actual real story, then I have no problems with it."   The remark is emblematic of the odd hubris Arenas has often displayed considering the trouble he is in. Arenas brought a small arsenal into the Wizards' locker room after a spat with teammate Javaris Crittenton. When told of NBA commissioner David Stern's fury over the matter, Arenas was dismissive in his response, and even contorted his hand to mimic a pistol in a subsequent team photo.   Such antics, as much as the crime itself,  are what led Stern to suspend Arenas for the rest of the NBA season. The government is said to have recommended a six-month jail term for the Washington point guard. Once the sentence is announced, the Wizards may try to void his contract.   Arenas is in the second year of a six-year, $111 million contract. When asked if he would like to play again for the Wizards, Arenas said, "Basketball is basketball. 74 7383 National Basketball Association (NBA) superstar Gilbert "Agent Zero" Arenas revealed he will do his best to rebuilt his relationship with the youth sector in Washington, DC after his suspension from the premier basketball league in the planet after he brought guns inside the locker room of the <a href="http://www.tickettogames.com/washington-wizards-tickets">Washington Wizards</a>. Arenas in a recent article he wrote to the Washington Post apologized to all his fans especially the youth for not being a role model he is supposed to be with his crime of gun possession. The top point-guard of the Wizards also called on the youth not to follow his crime instead live a life away from the violence. He explained he did not anymore contest the decision of NBA commissioner David Stern to suspend him for the rest of the season since he knew what he did was a big mistake. The NBA superstar hoped that the youth will understand the seriousness of his crime and not commit the same mistake that he did. Arenas said now that his suspension is in full-swing he would spend some of his time to talk to the youth in the DC sector for them to stay away from violence and the use of guns. Agent Zero also took time to apologize to the late owner of the Wizards Abe Pollin for his actions and vowed not to repeat the same crime again. Pollin who died last year was an advocate of non-violence when he was still alive. To keep the people of Washington especially the youth sector away from violence, Pollin even decided to change the name of the franchise from the Bullets to the Wizards in 1997. The NBA superstar said to keep the legacy of Pollin alive and the young generation of Washington free from violence he will do his best to become a role model for all. Arenas said he is deeply sorry for what he did and exert effort to help in educating the youth on the bad effects of violence in their lives. Wizards coach Flip Saunders is very happy with the decision of Arenas to spend more time with the youth to teach them about the ill effects of gun possession. Saunders said the whole Wizards are behind Arenas and hoped that he will still be part of the team once his suspension ends. The NBA season is getting more exciting and thrilling now that the teams are pushing hard to gain a seat to the playoffs, so NBA fans should not miss the chance to support their favorite teams in stadium by getting cheap NBA tickets.   76.97.188.228

82 7165  The NBA suspended Gilbert Arenas for the rest of the season. In addition, Javaris Crittendon was also suspended by NBA Commissioner  David Stern.  So now the Bullets, I mean Wizards, have even less going for them.  At 14-30, they are buried in the bottom of the Eastern Conference, saved only from the basement by the New Jersey Nets and their 4 wins.      It seems to be par for the course in Washington for the sports teams.  The Redskins, a once proud franchise, held a memorial chanting "<a href="http://www.informationman.com/Redskins.pdf">Hail to the Deadskins</a>".  The Nationals brought baseball back to D.C. by taking a team from Montreal.  They renamed the Expos.  They did not use the name Senators, seeing as the first Washington Senators went to Minnesota and the second Senators went to Texas, I guess it was time to try a new name.  Still, while they hang out at the bottom of the National League they look more like the Expos, or perhaps the old Senators from when Washington was first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League.  I miss the Expos, it was fun having a team in a province that speaks French that played some of their home games on an island that spoke Spanish.       But I can relate to where Washington is right now, I have seen a city there before.  I "came of age" as a sports fan in Boston in the 80's.  The Celtics were in the Larry Bird Era.  Celt's fans thought they were entitled to more championships, a feeling that would subside in the 90's.  1986 was one of the greatest years in Boston Sports History.  The Patriots made their first Super Bowl.  It is interesting to see the Saints and their fans experience their first trip to the Super Bowl, and to think back of the euphoria Boston fans felt back in '86.  We actually thought New England had a chance.  We even had a 3-0 lead on the Chicago Bears.  I wonder how much we are seeing history repeat itself with the Colts and Saints.  Later in '86, Bird won his third and final NBA Championship.  The Red Sox also had a great season.  I like to think of it as the season where Dave Henderson helped beat the Angels with an incredible home run with the team on the brink of elimination.  It is so much better than seeing it as the team that gave it away with a passed ball/wild pitch and ball through the legs.  But I don't blame Bill Buckner.  John McNamara should have had Dave Stapleton at first and Calvin Schiraldi should have remembered how to pitch.  Still, '86 was magical.     Then came the 1990s.  It was a lost decade for sports in Boston.  It was the only decade where the Celtics did not win a championship.  The Red Sox did not make it back to the World Series.  Bill Parcells brought credibility to the Patriots, and a Super Bowl appearance, but another loss, this time to the Packers.  But things turned around in the new decade, with three Super Bowl wins for the Patriots, two World Series Championships for the Red Sox and even the Celtics returned to glory winning the NBA Championship.  2004 easily replaced 1986 as the greatest year in Boston Sports History.  For me, my personal life was sky high during the first half of the decade, and down the tubes the second half of the decade.  As a result, I think I enjoyed the wins in the earlier half of the decade more.  I've been thinking about this as there has been discussion about rooting for the Saints because of Hurricane Katrina.  I just can not make the connection.  It is just a game.     Meanwhile, in Washington, things seem to be improving.  Some talk shows suggest they could have addition by subtraction on the Wizards.  (Really?  Let me know how that works out).  The Redskins have brought in Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan, and it kind of reminds me of when Parcells came to New England.  The Capitals are doing quite well.       And it seems we will always have the Nationals. 74.110.96.156

480 6986 It has been reported that Washington Wizards player Gilbert Arenas and the U.S. Attorney are attempting to negotiate a plea bargain. Arenas is under investigation for for the locker room incident last month and involves felony gun charges.    According to sources, Arenas' attorney and the DA are discussing a plea bargain in which Arenas would only be charged and convicted of  misdemeanor gun charges. A deal has not been struck yet, and this is not official, however, a deal could be finalized sometime today. As far as the actual charges that would be filed against Arenas, sources say that they would coincide with the plea, which would enable it to all go down quickly. As far as the actual sentence being discussed, this is not known at this time, however the DA would recommend a sentence but in the end it will come down to the judge's decision. As far as Arenas status with the Wizards concerning the incident, G.M. Ernie Grunfeld has stated that Arenas had violated his NBA contract which prohibits players from possessing a firearm in a team or league facility. 128 6892 Suddenly, the Sports Capital is the Nation's Capital.Sure, the National Championship is on the left coast, but surely the winning team will soon be making a trip here to meet the President.  The Capitals are at the top of the Southeast Division, and are buried in third place among the sports stories in the city.     The Redskins made national headlines in <a href="http://playerpress.com/articles/6873-mike-shanahan-is-the-new-coach-of-the-washington-redskins">the signing of Mike Shanahan as coach.</a>  (Playerpress article).  The problem?  Redskin fans have seen this show before.  Marty Shottenheimer was going to save the day.  So was Steve Spurrier.  They even brought back Joe Gibbs.  The other problem?  They still have Dan Snyder as the owner.  Maybe bringing in Bruce Allen will help.  Bruce Allen's father, George, lived by the creed "the future is now".  Shanahan would probably like to turn things around right away as well.  I guess the real answer will come in September.  So maybe the future is not right now but next fall.     Meanwhile, the Wizards continue to struggle, but now they have lost their shooting guard, Gilbert Arenas.  He was <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-wizards-arenassuspended&prov=ap&type=lgns">suspended indefinitely by the NBA</a>. (Yahoo article).  Do you ever notice when people try to compare themselves to athletes on sports radio or in a blog it never works out?  Some caller will make some comparison to his job as if he was as rare as an NBA point guard when in fact he is a tollbooth collector.  So here is my comparison, I don't know much about guns, and the only thing I can do well in Basketball is retire (I've retired four times now), but I am trying to compare myself to Arenas.  We both have two eyes, a heart, and a brain.  Although lately, looking at Arenas' latest actions, his brain might come into question.     Bringing the guns into the locker room was foolish.  But as my music teacher in high school used to say, we all take turns being (bleep) of the day.  So we all screw up.  What should be noted is what the person who screws up does next.  Arenas laughed at everyone.  Before Tuesday night's game against the 76ers, he <a href="http://youbeenblinded.com/gilbert-arenas-shooting-around-with-his-teammates/5493">pretended to shoot his teammates</a>.  (picture)  Was the NBA upset?   They ordered the picture be removed, it has since returned.  The suspension soon followed.  It was beyond foolish, it was just stupid.     Did GIlbert Arenas use his brain?  Maybe I have less in common with him than I thought.  I guess if I want to compare brains, I will take the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.  In the end, at least he showed he had some brains.  And maybe Washington can get the Wizard to play point guard for them.  I hear they have an opening.      With all of this happening in Washington, the Nationals could have a major free agent signing, and it would not be noticed.  But of course, that would never happen anyway.  Oh well, 38 days until pitchers and catchers report.... 72.215.148.50

128 6870  It seems Gilbert Arenas challenged a teammate to a duel, and the left is frantic.    Talk radio has been flooded with concerned citizens who demand action from NBA commissioner David Stern, declaring that his league has become a virtual O.K. Corral.  <o:p></o:p> Name one pro athlete who has killed another pro athlete with a gun.  <o:p></o:p> Take your time.  <o:p></o:p> Right. Not one.  <o:p></o:p> The few people who still care about the NBA are tired of off-court sagas usurping the news. It is true that peripheral issues have dominated basketball headlines, but that’s not because its players are packing heat. It’s because the game sucks. The game died when Jordan left, and no one has the stones to say it.  <o:p></o:p> Remember when college was the farm system for the NBA? Since Tim Duncan’s stellar career at Wake Forest there hasn’t been one college grad who has dominated the league. Now college is a funnel for one-and-done prodigies who know there are no fat checks in fraternities.  <o:p></o:p> It is also true that the NBA had just one important epoch, which started with Magic and Bird’s glorious tete-a-tete in 1979 and ended with Jordan’s retirement from the Bulls in 1998.  Basketball, whether you like it or not, is not embedded in American history or the American psyche. Indeed, baseball ruled the 1960s, football ruled the 1970s, and basketball often broadcasted their playoff games on tape delay until the 1980s.  <o:p></o:p> The on-court movement has become a series of one-on-one, dribble-drive battles, three point heaves, and four men standing around while the star player plans his next dreadful fadeaway.  <o:p></o:p> There is, of course, the reflexive response to anyone who has fallen out of love with the NBA. It is a sad, tired mantra contrived by insecure people who hate when facts interfere with their theories: “You just don’t like black guys with cornrows and tattoos.” Really? The NFL has more such men than the NBA ever will yet football has surpassed all sports in terms of popularity.  It is not the appearance of the athlete that we find repulsive but rather the actions of the athlete. The NBA’s dreadful ratings (if you care about facts) reflect the nation’s apathy.  <o:p></o:p> Football and baseball players don’t jump into the stands and assault their customers. Ron Artest does. Football and baseball players don’t go on ten-minute public diatribes lamenting “practice.” Allen Iverson does. Football and baseball officials don't bet on the games they officiate. Tim Donaghy does. Football and baseball players don’t declare that 75% of their league carries a concealed weapon. Devon Harris does.  <o:p></o:p> Harris’s remark will lead to misguided legislation that has hampered the country for decades, which presupposes that inanimate objects lead men to do bad things, when we really need to punish men for doing bad things. It is the gun’s fault, you see. If Gilbert Arenas never had access to firearms this would never have happened. He was a swell guy before that evil gun made its way into his holster.  <o:p></o:p> Perhaps the Wizards’ entire organization should be arrested instead, for changing their name (from “Bullets”) out of political correctness, for not being relevant since Elvin Hayes, and for forking over $100 million to a player (Arenas) who never cared much for anyone but himself.   68.199.47.81

This time, it was Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards.</div> <div> </div>  <div>From what I’ve know of Arenas, he seem to be not only a pretty good player, but a decent guy as well. That’s why when I heard he pulled a gun out on his teammate, I was pissed and disappointed.</div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div>I thought after the Plaxico Burress thing, that athletes, especially black athletes would have learned their lesson by now; apparently not.</div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div>What I am so angry about is Arenas is giving yet another black eye so to speak to not only himself, but other black athletes and the NBA in general. The NBA has fought so hard to change its image and here we are once again dealing with another stupid player pulling a stupid stunt.</div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div>It also makes me mad, because like Burress, Arenas could be looking at some jail time. He tried to play it off like it was a joke, but this is not laughing matter. </div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div>Somebody could have gotten hurt over this foolishness and it’s time to put a stop to it. 146 6690 Finally, a win. I am a hockey person, but I've played basketball and although I'm not exactly a pro, I understand the game. Arenas came through for his team after choking on two very important games recently, with 31 points. Earl Boykins also came through with 18 points to pull the Wizards to a  105-98 victory.   Caron Butler started off slow, but he too pulled it together in the fourth quarter to contribute to the win. This Wizards win puts them 9-17 for the season.   The Wizards are an interesting team, they have the players but have a hard time getting what counts -- a W in that win column. With the removal of Eddie Jordan, Washington fans expected a hot start, atleast I did. When they came out with an average start and have now downgraded to a losing season, I for one am confused. Flip Saunders is a good coach, and he has the superstars that are capable of a play-off team.   According to the Wizards post game live crew, the Wizards have had big problems in the turnover area. Tonight, they limited their turnovers and got the win.   Late in the game, Washington Coach Flip Saunders took out his superstars and replaced them with their usual 2nd string. The Bench scored 43 points out of the total 105, which is quite a bit considering they don't have much playing time compared to the 1st string.   When Arenas, Butler and the other starters were put back in, they kicked it up a notch, almost as if they had something to prove. Kudos to Flip Saunders for motivating his team's starters and gaining a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. 69.88.37.137

Washington Wizards PG Gilbert Arenas was fined $25,000 for NOT speaking to the media. The team was fined the same amount. The self coined “Hibachi” is feeling cold. This guy never used to shut up! Countless press conference and interview rants and raves. The commercials, nicknames, video games and blog posts are all a thing of the past for Agent Zero. In the Washington, D.C. area, "Gilbertology" was the name given to his unorthodox behavior on and off the court, first coined by former Wizards head coach Eddie Jordan. After being criticized for shooting too much as a point guard, Arenas would play games nearly without shooting at all, and then score at will the next game. On road trips, he often avoided team outings on the town in favor of sitting in his room and ordering products from infomercials, such as a colon cleanser. He has admitted to enjoying sleeping on the couch rather than on his bed, and that he once ate 12 cheeseburgers while on a road trip with the Wizards in Canada. He was one of the first athletes’ to jump on the blog train. NBA.com called him the first “blog superstar.” Media day this season signaled his intention to keep quiet, declaring, "I'm not the entertainer anymore." Arenas is returning after playing a total of 15 games the past two seasons following three operations on his left knee. Wouldn’t you think he has been chomping at the bits to remind everybody about Gilbert? "I don't feel like speaking anymore. I just want to go out there and play," he said during media day. “When I was entertaining, all you guys focused on was my words. Now I'd rather you just focus on my basketball." A changed man? Arenas is pulling a complete 180 degree turn...but why? He thrived on his cockiness. He was a free spirit that kept the Wizards loose. Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler fed off the incredibly high energy level he brought to every game. A serious Arenas is a serious problem for the Wiz. The closest sports comparison to Arenas is Chad OchoCinco of the Cincinnati Bengals. Both players are in the top 10 at their position. Both had flamboyant personalities that fueled them into the spot light constantly, for better or worse. Each one was the face of their franchise and for their respective leagues as well.   In 2008 Chad had a boycott on the Cincinnati media, didn’t talk for almost a year (unless he was on ESPN complaining about his contract.) The results were spectacularly awful. He had the worst season of his career and the Bengals were 4-11-1. This year Chad is yapping again and everything is back to normal. He has returned to Pro Bowl form and the Bengals already have last seasons win total after five games (4-1). I’m not saying the two players are wired the same way. But sometimes athletes need to be talking. The desire to challenge the opponent is installed in a player at a young age. It’s a mentality they will carry for as far as the sport will take them. There is little doubt that Arenas will continue to talk plenty of trash on the court. But is the guy going to completely shut down directly after? Seeing a quiet version of Arenas just doesn’t seem right. We’ll see how long this lasts but don’t be surprised if the Wizards struggle early on as they adjust to a rusty Arenas and his newly found off the court persona. 24.166.254.31
